Kollam - Holiday Tour Packages

Formerly known as Desinganadu, Kollam or Quilon is a city and an old seaport located on the coast of Laccadive Sea and on the banks Ashtamudi Lake in the state of Kerala in India. One of the early centers of Christian activity in the state, the city is visited by many travelers since the early medieval period and is still a very popular tourist destination up to this day. Here are some pieces of information for your visit to Kollam while you are on a Kerala vacation.

Top places to visit in Kollam

This city is best known for the Ashtamudi Lake, which is considered as the southern gateway to the Kerala Backwaters—a prominent tourist destination in India. There are also its farms that produce pepper, coir, cashews and other agricultural products. You can also explore its diverse local communities and its port where you will see fishermen along the coast. Slightly north of the town is a beach where you can have fund under the sun and some places where you can find European colonial-era relics, including churches and the ruins of a fort. There are also old colonial buildings that are scattered across the town.

Top things to do in Kollam

Here are the best things that you can do while in this city:

  • Canal Cruise - You can take a tour through the canals of Munroe Island organized by a few private operators. This guided cruise usually takes a 3-hour trip on a punted canoe, where you can observe everyday village life, see the construction of rice barge or kettuvallam, learn how to make coir and observe how to farm prawn and fish.
  • Houseboat Cruise - Like in Alleppey, you can take a houseboat cruise in Kollam, though it is less touristy.

Top attractions and landmarks in Kollam

Your Kollam holiday would not be complete without visiting the following attractions:

  • Thangassery - Located just about 5 kilometers away from the city, this is a place of historical importance, with old 18th-century churches, remnants of Dutch and Portuguese forts and a light house. This is a melting pot where the common people and Anglo-Indian communities are found and the culture is quite different from those in other parts of the city. Here, you can attend to English masses in the cathedral.
  • 13 Arch Bridge - Also known as the 13 Kannara Bridge, this structure offers a very beautiful sight. It was built during the British regime using the surki construction method, as cement was not in use during this period. As the name suggests, the bridge is made of 13 arches and it still holds the reputation of being one of strongest mountain rails in India, serving as the main trade route between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A train ride here will be a pleasant experience as you pass through long tunnels, dense forests and steep slopes.
