Must-Visit Sites in Kanyakumari

Thiruvalluvar Statue

It’s hard to miss the towering stone statue of Thiruvalluvar when you’re in Kanyakumari. The revered Tamil poet and philosopher is honored in a statue that stands 133 feet high to represent the 133 chapters of his literary masterpiece, the Tirukkural.

Its pedestal also stands 38 feet high to symbolize the 38 chapters of virtue in the same book. It is said that the statue took 5,000 tons of granite stone to build and was sculpted by Dr. V. Ganapati.

From the mainland, you can take a ferry to the statue for a closer look at this beautiful work of art.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Just adjacent to the Thiruvalluvar statue is the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari’s most famous tourist attraction.

A ferry ride takes you to the small island where India’s most loved saint Swami Vivekananda gained enlightenment in 1892. From this point, you can see where the three mighty oceans meet and if you want to mediate, the quiet Dhyan Mandapam is the perfect place to sit and experience pure bliss.

Gandhi Mandapam

Mahatma Ghandi, India’s most famous citizen, is honored in a memorial in Kanyakumari where his ashes were kept before being immersed in sea.

The Gandhi Mandapam features a modern architectural style and it was built in a way that every 2nd of October, the sun’s rays fall exactly where Ghandi’s ashes were placed.

Kanyakumari Beach
