Kolkata Tourist Spots You Shouldn’t Miss
If you booked one of the holiday packages to Kolkata, here are some of the must-see sites that you shouldn’t miss visiting:
Victoria Memorial
Visiting Victoria Memorial will transport you to England with its imposing colonial architecture. This grand white building is a sight to behold and was built in 1921. It was named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and now serves as a museum featuring collections from the British colonial period including books, paintings and sculptures. You can also catch a sound and light show in the evening that details the Raj era that lasted 300 years.
Park Street
Like Victoria Memorial, Park Street gives you a taste of England right in the middle of Kolkata. Formerly known as Mother Teresa Sarani, this is Kolkata’s most famous street and is home to the first independent nightclub in the country. Park Street has been a bustling night scene since the swinging 60s and now features clubs like Moulin Rouge, Mocambo and Blue Fox.
Mullik Ghat Flower Market
Perhaps there is no better place for a beautiful photo than in the middle of Mullik Ghat Flower Market. This colorful and vibrant market is 125 years old and is East India’s largest wholesale flower market. Feed your eyes with thousands of flowers lining up the market including long garlands of marigold, which is popularly used in Hindu rituals.
Mother Teresa’s Mother House
Mother Teresa is one of the world’s most renowned religious figures devoting her life helping the ill and outcast people in Kolkata. She is laid to rest in the Mother House where you can also see her bedroom and a small museum dedicated to her life.
Belur Math
The 40-acre complex of Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, which was founded by Swami Vivekananda. It has a shrine dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna and features a combination of Christian, Islamic, Buddhist and Hindu architectural styles. To get to Belur Math, you can take a 20-minute boat ride from the riverbank of Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. It’s best to experience the place at sunset so you can witness the aarti ceremony.
Howrah Bridge
It is considered the busiest bridge in the world with over 4 million pedestrians and 150,000 vehicles crossing it each day, and you must walk across it to get the real experience. Howrah Bridge was built in 1943 and links Kolkata with its twin city, Howrah.
