Things to Do in Ratnagiri

Take a walk down Ganapatipule Beach

Ganapatipule Beach is one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Konkan coast, attracting both beach lovers and devotees every year.

Ganapati temple is located on the shore where you can witness the aarti, a ritual of offerings to the gods.

When you’re in Ganapatipule, make sure to try riding a horse or camel on the shoreline or just take a walk by the beach.

When you’re hungry, there are several food stalls nearby where you can sample local Konkan cuisine.

Visit Jaigad Fort

Jaigad Fort was built by Bijapur Kings in the 16th century and was later passed on to Naiks of Sangameshwar who had 600 troops under his command. In 1713, Jaigad Fort was one of the ten forts given up by Balaji Vishwanath Peshwa to Angre and in 1818 was captured successfully by the British.

Today, the ruins of Jaigad Fort still stand including the palace of Kanhoji Angre, a Ganpati temple and some wells. The fort offers a fantastic view of the bay and sea, and is one of Ratnagiri’s most visited tourist spots.

Explore Bhagwati Mandir

Located at the highest peak of Ratnadurg Fort and surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, Bhagwati Mandir offers a calm and serene ambiance that attracts devotees and tourists every year.

Inside the temple, you will see the idol Shri Devi Baghwati and other deity idols like Ashtadashbhuj and Veer Vighnesh.

Indulge in Delicious Konkani Cuisine

If you love seafood, you’ll love the delicious Konkani cuisine in Ratnagiri. Dishes featuring generous amounts of fresh seafood like mackerel, prawns and surmai are mixed with spices that give them a unique taste. Don’t miss trying the Malvan chicken curry, fried prawns and masala pomfret.

The Best Time to Explore Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri is best explored from October to March when the weather is ideal for exploring and doing outdoor activities. You will also be able to witness festivals like Diwali, Holi and Dussehra, which are celebrated throughout the region.

If you’re willing to beat the summer heat, however, you can visit during the summer to taste the delicious Alphonso mangoes that Ratnagiri is known for.
