Where to Go in Darjeeling
Observatory Hill
Observatory Hill used to be the site of the original Dorje Ling monastery where Darjeeling got its name. Today, the hill attracts pilgrims and tourists for its several shrines and colorful prayer flags. Sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, devotees come to Observatory Hill to honor Mahakala.
Tiger Hill
Nothing beats the majestic views that Tiger Hill offers to its visitors. It offers unparalleled views of India’s highest peak, Khangchendzonga or the great five-peaked snow fortress, also the third highest peak in the world.
The 2590-meter hill also gives majestic views of the Kabru, Pandim and Jannu mountains. But if you really want the most spectacular views of the Himalayan horizon, which includes Everest, Makalu and Lhotse as the dawn breaks light into them, head to Tiger Hill early in the morning.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of only a few hill railways in India and has been serving passengers to and from Kurseong since September 1881.
Today, you can experience this railway with steam-powered rides during peak season or just see locomotives up close in the nearby Darjeeling train station.
Singalila National Park
If you want to get up close and personal with nature, you can take the Singalila Ridge Trek from Sandakphu to Palut where you will pass through Singalila National Park.
Guides are mandatory in the park and can be hired at Mane Bhanjhang, the trek’s starting point. The park offers a glimpse of the natural wonders of Darjeeling including its famous Himalayan views.

See How Tea Is Made
Darjeeling is famous for its aromatic teas and the best place to experience it is at the Happy Valley Tea Estate that has been producing teas since 1854. Here, you will see the process of making tea—from withering to drying and if you visit from March to November, you can see employees plucking in progress.
Visit a Refugee Center
Darjeeling is home to the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center that was established in 1959 to help refugees improve their life. It has a school, orphanage, home of the aged, a clinic and a gompa for refugees to use.
It also has several craft workshops where you can buy carpets, woodcarvings and woolen products that all goes back to the Tibetan community.
