The walls surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem serve as fortifications which, in the Hebrew term, make it impenetrable and inaccessible. The walls were built as the next form of defense. They are equipped with towers, ladders and storage rooms. The wall system is made up of a higher inner wall and a lower outer wall with a dry moat in between. The inner walls were equipped with towers, followed by the gates. The Old City had many gates, some of which have been sealed, broken open, and then resealed. Today, there are a total of 8 gates that open to the city—Damascus Gate, Zion Gate, Jaffa Gate, Golden Gate, Lions Gate, New Gate, Flower Gate, and the Dung Gate.
