Jerusalem - Top Tourist Attractions

Wondering what top places to visit when in Jerusalem or the Holy Land? Wonder no more. Below is a list of a few top tourist attractions and landmarks to visit during your holiday tour to Jerusalem, Israel.

Old City

This is where you'll see some of the top attractions in Jerusalem in one go. Within the ancient walls of the Old City is the Al Aqsa Mosque, Dome of the Rock Islamic shrine, the Western Wall, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Head to a medieval citadel and check out the Tower of David museum. Explore the ancient city on foot and visit markets and shops along the way too.

Al Aqsa Mosque

The silver-domed mosque of Al Aqsa is considered by world Muslims as the third holiest religious site of Islam, located inside a 35-acre compound called as al-Haram al-Sharif or the Noble sanctuary in the Old City, Jerusalem, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Western Wall

More popularly known as the Wailing Wall, the Western Wall attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world and from a different denomination. It is the holiest site in Judaism. Not far from the Wall is the Jerusalem Archaeological Park, Western Wall Tunnels, and the Jewish Quarter Street.

Dome of the Rock

This is the most iconic landmark of Jerusalem with a huge golden dome, The Dome of the Rock stands mighty in the city's skyline.  For Muslims, Dome of the Rock, a seventh-century structure is believed to be where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to heaven. Access to the Dome of the Rock is limited. The set schedule should be followed.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Christians consider this as the holiest site in Jerusalem and is believed to be the place where Jesus was crucified. It boasts of a beautiful and opulent religious architecture that awes pilgrims and tourists alike. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the endpoint of the Via Dolorosa pilgrimage.

Temple Mount

Also commonly referred to as Al-Haram Al-Sharif or the Noble sanctuary, is believed to be where Abraham offered his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to heaven, and where the First Temple for the Ark of the Covenant was built by Solomon. It is also where you'll find 3 of the top attractions in Jerusalem—the Old City, Dome of the Rock, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Via Dolorosa Street

It's not a trip to the Holy Land if you don't follow the processional route through the Via Dolorosa Street. Believed to be the same path that Jesus took on his way to his crucifixion, walking down the winding route will be a spiritual experience.

Church of the Nativity

What is the Holy Land if not for its churches and religious sites? One of these is the Church of the Nativity or the Basilica of the Nativity that features a grotto believed to be Jesus' birthplace.

Tower of David

Also known as the Jerusalem Citadel, the Tower of David holds a historical and archaeological significance for many people around the world. Getting there also holds a promise of a stunning panoramic 360-degree view of Jerusalem.

Dead Sea

Not exactly part of the Jerusalem city or Holy Land but taking a detour to this amazing place when you visit is a must. While no living creature can survive with the high salinity of the sea, humans can benefit from its health properties.

Mount Zion

Mount Zion is a small hill with big significance to the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. It is home to King David's Tomb, the Last Supper Room, and Jewish and Muslim shrines. Not far from it are the Church of the Dormition and the Church of St. Peter of Gallicantu.
