Where Is It Located?
Lan Kwai Fong (nicknamed LFK) is historically a small L-shaped lane in Hong Kong’s Central business district. The lane used to host prostitutes in the late 1800s, although it became a spot for street traders in the 1900s. Everything changed three decades ago when businessman Allan Zeman built the California Bar and later the California Entertainment Building and the California Tower.
These developments attracted investors and business owners, who proceeded to build restaurants, bars, and even art galleries in the area. Today, Lan Kwai Fong has outgrown its small cobble-stoned lane and has expanded into D'Aguilar Street and even into Wyndham Street, Wing Wah Lane, and other nearby areas.
What to Expect
If you’re claustrophobic, you’ll want to avoid Lan Kwai Fong. The area is usually crowded especially in the evening, with hundreds of people compressed into the narrow, sloping streets. This isn’t really surprising since many locals head off to Lan Kwai Fong to enjoy a round of drinks after work, while tourists hang out in the area to soak in the distinct LFK atmosphere and make new friends.
When you get to Lan Kwai Fong, make sure to take a picture of yourself with the LFK official street sign.
