Take a guided or self-guided tour of New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve, walking amongst erupting waters, an active mud volcano and land coral. Experience getting your hands and feet dirty in our healing mud foot pool or try your hand at Māori carving. You’ll soon discover the legends and myths behind Hell’s Gate.

Not only have we seen the geothermal experience through the walk, but the weather showed us (almost) four seasons in a day. The reserve is well maintained and staff very kindly.

An amazing place to visit. We chose the guided walk and so glad we did. Our guide Ngati (his full name was so much longer) was an absolute gem. His passion for his culture and heritage was so wonderful to see. His stories were so interesting and gave us a great insight into Māori culture. The walk was well paced and the views awesome. I would highly recommend a visit to Hell’s Gate if you are in Rotorua or even make a special trip it’s well worth it but do the guided tour it’s amazing.

There is a free 90-minute tour each morning and afternoon by a Māori guide. We attended, it was fantastic and brought the place to life. Highly recommended.
