Overview

The one-hour fixed-wing flight from Queenstown to Franz Josef glacier is certainly spectacular, but the highlight of this trip is the glacier Heli Hike. The experienced guides will take you into a deep part of the glacier via a scenic helicopter flight. The helicopter passes over the deep crevasses of the icefalls and waterfalls to land on the upper ice fall of Franz Josef glacier. From there you’ll be fitted with crampons for the two hours on the ice, exploring caves and seeing the natural, ever-changing wonder of the glacier in the South Island of New Zealand.

This is where the hiking portion of the tour will take place. Take in the beauty of the glacier up close and personal. The contract between the rainforest and the alpine environment is truly spectacular.
The total duration of this tour includes check in time in Cooks and the flight from Queenstown to Franz Josef Glacier and vice versa.

Jason flew us to Franz Josef, he was an amazing guide and gave us a zig zag tour thru the mountains and gave us a speaking tour of the southern alps as we flew. Including a trip around Mount Cook, the tallest peak in NZ.

We had an incredible experience with True South Flights! We did the Franz Josef Heli Hike and it was a brilliant experience! Andy, our pilot for the scenic flight was absolutely fab and gave us so much information about the geography of New Zealand. It was also beautiful from the sky! Our hike on the glacier was absolutely incredible, very organised and we felt well looked after! Our guide Tom made the experience once in a life time and it was such fun too!! We loved it- thank you True South for organising this wonderful trip for us! Emily and James ☺️

Very responsive in the emails when I inquired. Maybe it was just me but there wasn't much communication the day before. There are instructions to call an hour before the indicated time, and that was my final confirmation that the trip will push through. They picked us up at the hotel, then we went to the office to sign some forms, and was led to the hangar. You fly through incredible landscapes to and from Franz Josef. They provide you with everything you need: weatherproof jacket and pants, warm socks, beanie and mittens, boots, crampons and a bag. The sling bag can only pretty much fit a bottle of water and some small snacks since it has to fit in your crampons too. The glacier hike was a little less than 2 hours and suitable for different ages. On our tour, we had 65 year olds!
