After hotel pickup, your vehicle makes the journey north from Bangkok to Ayutthaya Historical Park, located 53 miles (85 km) away. The old capital of Thailand (aka the Kingdom of Siam) from 1350 until 1767, Ayutthaya was largely destroyed by the Burmese and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site full of intact temples, monasteries, palace ruins and beheaded Buddhist statues.

One of the most important temples in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon has a long and illustrious history. And unlike many of the other ancient sites in Ayutthaya, this is still an active temple where monks reside. Thai people visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon to not only pay respects to Buddha, but also to pay homage to one of the most respected kings in Thai history, King Naresuan the Great.

Stop At: Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, Pratuchai Subdistrict, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand
The distinctive pagodas of Wat Phra Si Sanphet are one of the most famous sights in Ayutthaya. Much like the iconic Buddha head in tree roots at nearby Wat Phra Mahathat, images of this historic temple adorn the front of many of the post-cards and travel books that are sold in Ayutthaya.

Stop At: Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam), Phratuchai Subdistrict, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand
Although Wat Lokaya Sutha (also written as Wat Lokayasutharam) is not one of the most famous historic sites in Ayutthaya, it remains an impressive location to visit. And that is thanks to the temple’s most striking feature, the giant reclining Buddha image. At 42 metres long and 8 metres high, the statue towers over the devotees who come here to make offerings.

Stop At: Wat Phra Ram, Ayutthaya 13000 Thailand
The temple has a central Prang built in Khmer-style architecture, housed in a large square platform surrounded by many chedis (stupas). The main entrance is to the west side, but it was initially an east-facing temple. There are two halls on either side of the Prang. The sanctuary of the temple houses many ruined statues of Buddha. Though most of the temple is destroyed, it speaks a lot about the glory of this kingdom.
