It’s hard to miss the distinctive spires of Wat Arun on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. Named after the Indian God of Dawn Aruna, the temple is Thailand’s most striking landmark, especially during the sunrise where the first morning light strikes the temple beautifully and the sunset when its spires create a stunning silhouette against the city’s skyline.
Also known as the “Temple of Dawn,” Wat Arun was designed to represent Mount Meru, which is the center of the world according to Buddhist cosmology. The temple has been in existence since the early 17th century, but its distinctive “prangs” or spired were built under the reign of King Rama II during the early 19th century.
The central tower stands at least 66 meters and is encrusted with porcelain. On top is a seven-pronged trident believed to represent the “Trident of Shiva.”
Among the 31,000 temples around Thailand, Wat Arun is one of the top destinations for tourists because of its unique beauty that stands out from the rest of Bangkok’s façade. Get in touch with us at La Vacanza to know how you can book a tour at Wat Arun and the rest of Bangkok’s top tourist attractions.
