Shanghai's Promenade: The Bund
Also known as Waitan, the Bund is central Shanghai's waterfront area. The term is often used to refer to the wharves and buildings on the section of Zhongshan Road and some adjacent areas.
What makes it one of the most famous destinations that tourists in Shanghai flock to?
On the one mile stretch along the bank of the Huangpu River are magnificent architecture and buildings that delight the eyes at daylight and become a magical view of lights when the sun goes down.
Many of the buildings here feature Eclecticist architectural style with a good mix of Art Deco, Baroque Revival, Gothic Revival, Romanesque Revival, Renaissance Revival, Neo-Classical or Beaux-Arts styles.
Some of the main buildings are:
- American Club 209 Fuzhou Rd
- Shanghai Club
- The Mercantile Bank of India, London, and China
- Great Northern Telegraph Building
- HSBC Building
- Gutzlaff Signal Tower
Some of these structures have a rich history attached to them. The Great Northern Telegraph Building, for example, is the site of Shanghai's first telephone switch.
As the most recognizable symbols of Shanghai, it remains the pride and joy of the Chinese municipality. With buildings that date back to the 1800s, the Bund is a living museum.
