Paris may be synonymous with the Eiffel Tower, but if there is one monument that can rival its popularity, it has to be the Arc de Triomphe.
Located at the West end of the Champs-Elysees in the middle of Place Charles de Gaulle, the Arc De Triomphe, which means the “Triumphal Arch of the Star” was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1836 to commemorate his victory at Austerlitz and remember the people who fought and died during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars.
In fact, all the names of the French generals and victories are inscribed on the monument’s inner and outer surfaces, and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I lies beneath its vault.
The Arc de Triomphe stands 50 meters tall, 45 meters wide and 22 meters deep with its large vault measuring 29.19 meters. And if you’re willing to climb 284 steps up to the viewing platform on top of the arch, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of Paris’ dozen avenues including some of its most iconic landmarks.
Get in touch with La Vacanza today to book one of our tour packages that include a stop at the famous Arc de Triomphe.
