Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral
Perhaps the grandest example of French Gothic architecture, Notre-Dame de Paris has stood tall since it was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. The cathedral is located at the Ile de la Cite on the 4th arrondissement of Paris and it is one of the city’s top tourist spots.
Consecrated to the Virgin Mary, Notre-Dame carries centuries’ worth of history in its walls—from being built over the remnants of what used to be a pagan city to its roof containing one of the oldest surviving wood timber frames in the city where 52 acres of trees were cut during its construction.
Notre-Dame is famous for its two towers, which may look like twins from afar, but with closer examination, the North tower is bigger than the south tower. It has also witnessed some of the most significant historical events in Paris including the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
For years, restoration has been done to the cathedral to keep its grandeur alive. Although Notre-Dame suffered significant damage during a fire on April 15, 2019, reconstruction efforts are now underway to bring back the cathedral’s glory that tourists have come to love.
