Also known as the Langkawi SkyCab, this cable car is one of the top attractions on the island where it offers an aerial link from the Oriental Village at the upper northwest part of the island to the second highest peak in Langkawi, Gunung Machinchang where the Langkawi Skybridge is also located.
Opened in 2003, the Langkawi Cable Car spans for 2.2 kilometers and the ride from the base to the top of the mountain roughly takes about 15 minutes.
The idea of creating a cable car in Langkawi came about when then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad flew over Gunung Machinchang onboard a helicopter. The gondola cable car system was chosen for the project since it allowed for a span of 900 meters.
The Langkawi Cable Car has three stations. The Base Station is located at the Oriental Village, a shopping center that showcases the best of Malaysian and Oriental architecture.
The Middle Station is where the gondolas make a 45-degree turn to reach the top. Finally, the Top Station has two circular viewing platforms where you get 360-degree views of Langkawi. Being located 708 meters above sea level, the viewing platform is a lot cooler than the lowlands.
