Bekal Fort, Kerala
Located in the beautiful town of Kasaragod at the northern extreme of Kerala, the Bekal Fort is the most well-preserved and the largest in the entire state, bordered by a beautiful beach.
This fort, which dates back to the 17th century, is shaped like a giant keyhole and has tall observation towers that offer a splendid view of the Arabian Sea. It is said that, two hundred years ago, the towers were occupied by cannons of huge sizes. Built by the past rulers of the ancient Kadampa Dynasty, the fort changed hands among several royalties over the years, including the Tipu Sultan, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Kolathiri Rajas, and the British East India Company.
