A short trip five kilometers south of Chiang Mai will take you to the countryside along the majestic Ping River where Wiang Kum Kam, the ancient city built by King Mangrai the Great as his capital is located. This archaeological site dates back the eighth century and later served as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom before it was replaced by Chiang Mai in 1296.
The ancient city was abandoned more than 700 years ago when it was completely flooded. The same incident happened three times in 2005 when the Ping River overflowed into the city. Today, Wiang Kum Kam is flocked by tourists for its historical value where several sites are preserved.
Wat Chedi Liam or the Temple of the Squared Pagoda is the most prominent structure in the ancient city with five levels decorated following the Mon style. It is also the only working temple in Wiang Kum Kam where local monks still live.
Other temples in the area include Wat Chang Kham, What I Khang, Wat Nan Chang, Wat Phra Chao Ong Dam, Wat Phaya Mangrai, Wat That Noi and Wat That Khao. Walking through these archaeological sites will easily make you feel like you’ve been transported back in time where you can see how life was in the ancient city before the flood destroyed it.
