Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is an iconic landmark and it is one of the most revered temples in all of Chiang Mai that every child in the province learns about its founding legend in school. Often referred to as Doi Suthep, the Theravada Buddhist temple located 15 kilometers from the center of Chiang Mai was named after the mountain where it sits.
Many stories have been told about how Doi Suthep came to be, but the most popular is the legend of the white elephant where a monk named Sumanathera from the Sukhothai Kingdom had a dream where he was told to go to Pang Cha to look for a relic. He found a bone believed to be Gautama Buddha’s shoulder.
After being rejected by the king of Sukhothai, the monk brought the relic to Lamphun where it broke into two pieces, one of which was placed by King Nu Naone of Lan Na on a white elephant’s back. The elephant climbed Doi Suthep, trumpeted three times and died.
Today, Doi Suthep is a top attraction and is flocked by devotees and tourists alike even if it takes 309 steps to reach the pagodas of the temple. On top, you’ll see sweeping views of Chiang Mai while admiring the different statues, shrines, bells and a museum that tells the story of the temple.
