No other place in Thailand has more temples than Chiang Mai with over 300 “wats” scattered around the city and the neighboring countryside. Most of these temples date back to the Lanna Kingdom between the 13th and 18th centuries and feature curved wooden roofs reminiscent of the Lanna style.
The most popular temple within the walls of the old city has to be Wat Chedi Luang, which dates back to 1400 and was once the tallest temple in ancient Thailand. The temple features a brick and stucco structure and it’s decorated with huge elephant statues, some of which have been destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century.
Wat Phra Singh is another must-visit where the Lion Buddha is displayed since 1367 before its head was stolen in 1922. It was also believed to be the first home of the Emerald Buddha before it was moved to different temples and finally settled at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
Other famous temples in the old city include Wat Phan Tao or the Temple of a Thousand Kilns, Wat Khuan Khama or The Horse Temple and Wat Lok Moli. You should also visit Wat Suan Dok, the oldest flower garden in Chiang Mai and home to the campus of the Buddhist Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.
