It is often overshadowed by the popularity of the Forbidden City as an attraction, but Beihai Park is every bit as grand and historical as its famous neighbor. Beihai Park is the oldest imperial garden in the world and its history goes back as far as 983 when it was built during the Liao dynasty due to many emperors’ quest for the elixir of life by building a royal garden with one pool and three hills to mimic the three magic mountains “Penglai,” “Yingzhou” and “Fangzhang.”The result is a beautiful 70-hectare park, half of which is covered by a lake. In the middle of the lake is the Jade Flowery Islet with Beihai Park’s most famous landmark, the White Dagoba. Built-in 1651 on the site of the palace where Kublai Khan received Marco Polo, the White Dagoba stands 120 feet and has two bronze umbrella-like canopies with 14 hanging bronze bells in them.Visiting Beihai Park will take you back in time with its beautiful structures and gardens reminiscent of the old China. It’s also a great spot to visit since it doesn’t have as many tourists as the Forbidden City nearby.
