Take a trip to these magical hidden gardens… These are rare survivals of Victorian gardens once used by trades folk living above their businesses in Warwick to escape from the crowded town.

The gardens are a unique example of the once-common Victorian detached pleasure garden – distinctly different from allotments – with their characteristic summer houses, hedge lines, pathways and orchards.

These historically significant plots were cultivated for both pleasure and production with tiny ornamental beds, small lawns as well as fruit and vegetables.

Founded in 1154 as a Cistercian monastic house has connections to Queen Victoria, Prince Charles and Jane Austen. Built on a land grant from King Henry II, it was later converted into the Leigh family home.

The older portion of the house, built from local red sandstone, was started in 1561 and successive generations added to the design. The newest part of the house was completed around 1720 and was designed by Francis Smith of Warwick.
