Our young guide was clearly a very nice person and enjoys walking but we had to keep asking questions the whole walk to get any information from him. He seemed uninspired and might have done the walk too many times or was very shy. You don’t need a guide for this walk at all. It’s on a path and very clear where to go as it’s circular! The walk is worth doing and lasts approx 2 hours crossing streams and with a beautiful waterfall half way. Unfortunately we were disappointed at the lack of information. Also our tour company ‘Trailfinders’ sold this tour as a ‘Sunset tour’ which it might be at some time of the year but not in January as the guide said it was too late to stay for the sunset. We note this is now called a ‘pre- sunset tour’ which it wasn’t when sold to us. In short, take your own tipple , stop when you want to stop, dip in the water if you want to and time it so you see the sun set.

This was a two and a half hour hike which was advertised as a gentle walk. It wasn't. I was told that there would be some steps but in reality it was a difficult climb up steep steps to a waterfall and 100 steep steps back up from it. I am an experienced walker and I found this very difficult. We only stopped once at the falls for half a glass of wine and barely paused for the scenery. Our guide was charming and very patient with me when I struggled with the steps but this should not be advertised as a gentle walk.

Chose to do the sunset hike hoping for a colourful view. Unlucky for us, we got rain and a tiny bit of snow instead. Stewart our guid, was fantastic and improved the gloomy situation. We still had a great hike and got to see Taranaki Falls

Our relatively short 2 and a half hour walk to the Taranaki Falls (aka Lotr, Gollum’s Pool) was comfortable and easy. Guided by Frank we learned about the terrain and many of the native plants lining our route... he was helpful and knowledgeable but didn’t bombard us with information. The Falls do not disappoint....amazing, even in the current prolonged dry spell. As we came to the end of the walk we were rewarded with a spectacular sunset, suggested and hoped for in the walk’s description! A really good experience! Would definite recommend!

Stuart was our guide and led us on the Silica Falls walk. It isn't a loop hike so we positioned his car on one end and ours on the other. We enjoyed the walk and all the information about area, plants, and history. We then drove to a different location to watch the sun set which was gorgeous.
