Overview

Departing from downtown Seward at 6pm, the Coastal Classic Train travels north along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives in Anchorage at 10:15pm.

What Can You Expect?

After spending the day in the port town of Seward, take the evening train to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad! You will not be disappointed by the stunning vistas on your relaxing 4-hour journey from Seward to Anchorage. The large picture windows and open vestibules on the train provide excellent photo-taking opportunities along the journey, and local guides share the stories behind the sights along the way.

ACTUALLY VISITED JUNE 2019. However, my review was sitting in DRAFTS rather than being posted. My mistake, I guess, but since I took the time to write a review after visiting, I wanted to post it anyway. Here is what I wrote at the time of my visit: The Alaska Railroad was a well run adventure. We left the depot on time, had a personable staff helping us, enjoyed a good meal in the dining car, had unlimited beverages (non alcoholic), and a great and comfortable ride! You can purchase alcohol and/or snacks...card only...no cash. The train arrived to the depot on time. They got the luggage off the train amazingly fast for this many customers. This in itself was fun to watch! Hotel shuttles and taxis were waiting when we arrived. We did not see much wildlife on the ride, but the staff alerted us when they saw something. Highly recommended!

Everything about this train trip exceeded our expectations. The staff were friendly, courteous, very helpful & knowledgeable about the trip. The trip was comfortable in Star Class with a delicious meal & a variety of drinks. We were in awe & amazement at the beautiful & spectacular scenery that we encountered around every bend of the trip. We 100% recommend this experience for all ages and are so very happy that we decided to choose Star Class travel.

The scenic views from the train during the trip are no less than spectacular. The timing of the trip means that you have a front row seat to a sunset over the coast from start to finish and light lasts nearly until the trip ends. Really great. Dining car was pretty good but you can't really relax in there; too much pressure to vacate so as to accommodate the passenger load. Granted, the railway has no real control over them but people do troop up and down the train constantly. Upon arrival in Anchorage, the scene at the baggage claim awning was among the most chaotic I've ever witnessed. Very stressful...

The train ride was amazing!! I would suggest not purchasing tickets thru TripAdvisor as they didn’t get me tickets until 4 days after order & after I had to email multiple times. I purchased a set directly from railroad for less money. Since TripAdvisor wouldn’t refund me, Alaska Railroad did for my second set. Buy direct and you will have an amazing time!
