Stop At: Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, 8 Boulevard de Menilmontant, 75020 Paris France

Your rendez-vous with Paris’ famous dead begins in the morning at Alexandre Dumas metro station. Meet your english-speaking guide and stroll into Père Lachaise Cemetery, the city’s most visited graveyard. Spanning 110 acres (44 hectares), this cemetery houses hundreds of thousands of the city’s famous and infamous dead in tombs of varying extravagance.

Hear about some of the site’s famous artists, musicians and writers that rest here such as Edith Piaf, Molière, Chopin, Proust, Delacroix, Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. Wander through the labyrinth of graves and along stony paths to visit tombs accented in eccentricity and distinction. As you experience the haunting magnificence of the cemetery, you’ll learn tragic histories of lovers like Heloïse and Abelard – united in a single tomb in the 1817 after centuries apart – and forward-thinking women like writers Gertrude Stein and Collette. Your 2-hour tour concludes at Porte du Rèpos near the Philippe Auguste metro stop.

In addition to the famous people like Chopin, Moliere, Edith Piaf, and Jim Morrison, we got a kick out of the memorial to Victor Noir. Rubbing his shoes and his tallywhacker, and giving him a big kiss is supposed to guarantee a pregnancy. Good luck to our fellow traveler and hopefully soon a baby Victor or Victoria!

Kritika was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, charismatic and was happy to answer any and all questions. The tour was really interesting and we got to see the most famous graves and some lesser known but important ones too. Highly recommended!

An excellent tour of the most significant, well known cemetery in Paris. The tour guide, Becky, is a true student of history and did an amazing job. Many fascinating facts, stories, and sites that were shared. The tour was about 2 hours long which was the perfect length. It entails walking on the stone paths and trails around the cemetery to any number of famous gravesites as well as other portions of the cemetery with interesting histories of their own - case in point the last stand of the Communards took place here in 1871 as Becky showed us. Highly recommend taking the tour as while it's possible to enter the cemetery on your own and use QR codes and charts to navigate, it's much more fun and informative, not to mention relaxing, to take the tour instead. Can't say enough good things about the guide, Becky, as she was top notch and did an expert job guiding us, piquing everyone's interest, and ensuring we had a great day. Whether passing through, doing touristy things in Paris, or living in Paris or France in general, this is a great tour to take as it's away from the crowds in a peaceful, meaningful setting. If you decide to go, be sure to inquire if you can have Becky as your guide.
