Visiting Lucerne’s landmark mountain, Mt. Pilatus, is a must-do when you're in the Lake Lucerne region. Start at the valley station in Kriens, and enjoy a 30-minute gondola ride over a pre-Alpine landscape to reach Fräkmüntegg, where you'll transfer to the aerial cableway known as the 'Dragon Ride.' After another five minutes, arrive at 7,000 feet above sea level (2,132 meters). Soak up the panoramic views over the lake and Alps, and then take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down through rock faces, mountain streams, and lush meadows to reach Alpnachstad (from beginning or middle May till November 20th 2022, otherwise the panoramic cable car is operating).

This is a no guided tour and it's why that there is no meeting point.

Visit: Pilatus Luzern, Schlossweg 1, Kriens, Lucerne 6010 Switzerland

Take the panoramic cable car from Kriens, closed to Lucerne (bus no. 1 from Lucerne station, bus stop Zentrum Pilatus in Kriens, then a 10 minutes walk to the cable car station) and in 30 minutes you will reach the station Fräkmüntegg where you will find lots of attractions for the families like the biggist rope park in Central Switzerland, Dragon Glider, Top Tree Path and Restaurants. You will also change into the big cable car Dragon Ride there and in 3 minutes you will reach the top of Pilatus, the Dragon Mountain, where you can enjoy the panoramic views over the Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps, taste some local meal in one of the Restaurants or do a unforgettable hiking tour. Going back you can take the steepest cogwheel railway in the world to the village of Alpnachstad, located directly at the lake (you need 30 minutes for the ascent and 40 minutes for the descent) and enjoy this ride with the unique cogwheel railway. Absolutely fantastic tour, it was a money well spent! Breathtaking view, authentic music was played by some locals on the top of the mountain. The cable car took us to the top from Kriens and the railway took us back to the valley to Alpnschstad. From here we rode the train and a bus to get back to our car. The parking fee was only payable by cash, it was a bit of difficulty as we got used to be able to pay with card everywhere in Switzerland.

This was so fun! I only wish they would have told us that if we choose the cogwheel train on the way down, we have to catch public transport back to the parking lot for a separate price. The views are breathtaking and my kids loved playing in the snow at the top. The cafe is quite nice and there are lots of activities that can done on the way up or down. Definitely the most memorable experience on our Lucerne trip.

We took the cogwheel up and then back down. It would have been nice to do the boat, cogwheel and trams, but we did not have enough time. Very Very expensive to take a family to the top for a few hours, but we are glad we did and hiked around. We went in the morning with first car and there was no one there, by the time we returned from hiking it was packed. Very cool 30 min trip up the mountain and fun time walking around with 360 degree views.

We are a couple travelling to Switzerland by our car from Germany. We stayed in 3 cities in our 6D5N trip, my husband almost drove everyday. Then I think I want him to enjoy the scenic view I had while he was driving, and so we planned a day trip from Zurich to Mt Pilatus by train. As we haven’t got the train pass, the train tickets were not cheap. It costed us 320€ for the round trip from Zurich to the mountain on first class. We chose first class because we traveled on a Sunday, and the lady at the travel center at Zurich hauptbahnhof reminded us that as lots of locals traveled within the country because of Covid-19, first class was a better choice to secure a seat and to keep the social distancing. We were so lucky that the weather was great, we did couple of easy walks from the Alpnachstad, took lots of pictures. We had a great time there. Highly recommended this trip as 1) Switzerland is such an expensive place that this is probably the only time I travel there, 2) the weather was great and so the pictures are so good, make sure you check the weather forecast before buying any tickets!

Wring advise we would have come back on the same cable car to the car park without the return train and buss journey. The dragon train was very slow nothing exciting the return train ticket was very expensive and after that buss journey and had walked bad tour need to give what is best but offered the worst
