Overview

A private and bespoke trip from London to Cornwall (Return)

Doc Martin and Poldark are filmed on the beautiful north Cornwall coast. It can be difficult to get there if you don't have a vehicle, so let me do all the work for you. A fully personal and private tour at your pace.

You will be picked up direct from your Hotel or accommodation in a comfortable private vehicle by me, (Richard) I'm a huge fan of the shows and passionate about Cornwall.

Day one will focus on all things Doc Martin and the gorgeous village of Port Isaac which becomes Port Wenn in the show. See all the main locations including The School, The Pub, Mrs Tishell's Pharmacy and of course the Doc's Cottage and Surgery.

Day two it's all about the moody and atmospheric world of Ross Poldark from the hit BBC series Poldark.

The perfect short trip from London to the stunning landscapes of Cornwall.

Itinerary

Day 1: Doc Martin and Port Wenn Filming Locations - Port Isaac and Tintagel

Stop At: Church Hill, Port Isaac PL29 3RQ, UK
Doc Martin and Poldark have many fans around the world. Doc Martin is a more light hearted drama with lovable characters and amusing story lines. Poldark is a little more moody and atmospheric. What do they share in common? The answer -Cornwall

Both of these wonderful TV Shows are shot in Cornwall in the south west of England, and many of the locations are relatively close to each other. This tour is ideal for fans of both shows, as we will divide out time equally between them.

A personalised tour, bespoke to you. No large groups, just you and me!, your personal tour guide and driver.

Day One - All about the Doc - Cornwall is about 4.5 hours from London, so we will depart early to make the most of our trip. (Other pick up locations are possible if you are not staying in London) We will break up the journey on route to stretch our legs and take refreshment before heading on down through Devon and in to Cornwall. Arriving around lunchtime we will head first to Tintagel the legendary birthplace of King Arthur.

Doc Martin fans will recognize the dramatic coastline used as a backdrop in many episodes, and other locations like the Castle Hotel where many restaurant, reception and party scenes are filme. Perched on the cliffs is St Materiana's Church, which provided the venue for PC Penhale's disastrous wedding.

Lets now make our way to Port Isaac - AKA Port Wenn.

Perhaps you can tuck in to a traditional Cornish Pasty or the huge Fish & Chips at the Golden Lion Pub (the real life pub that is renamed the Crab & Lobster in the TV series)

Then we can explore the Village - The School where Louisa is Head Teacher, Mrs Tishell's Pharmacy, Characters Homes, Key filming locations and of course the Doc's surgery and Cottage. For those with some energy we will walk to the top of the village and on to the cliffs to get a beautiful view of the village often used in the filming. Once we have toured the Village we can make the short trip on foot or by car to Port Gaverne - Home to PC Penhale and the beach often used for filming scenes and story lines.

Then perhaps it will be time for a traditional Cornish Cream Tea?

I will leave you to enjoy your evening in Port Isaac as you wish, but will be on hand for anything you need.

Day 2: Poldark's World

Stop At: Holywell Bay Beach, Holywell Bay, Newquay TR8 5PP England
Holywell Bay is one of the most used backdrops in Poldark. This becomes Warleggan Bay in the show, and is often the location used when Ross and Demelza have a dramatic altercation as the waves crash around them. Demelza also had a secret rendezvous with Captain Hugh in the nearby Dunes, and Drake and Morwenna make wishes in the water pools of the caves.

The cliffs above the bay are also used for the scenes of characters galloping on horseback or meeting on the coastal footpaths.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Wheal Coates Tin Mine, St Agnes England
Wheal Coates is the stand in for Wheal Grace and Wheal Leisure, the mines owned by Ross Poldark. The dramatic cliffs, coupled with the crashing waves below are also used in many scenes from the series.

If you are feeling energetic we can climb down the footpath and visit the Towanroath Engine House, one of the most photographed spots in Cornwall, and one of the best preserved mine shafts in the area.

The cliff paths are used in the show, and you may feel that Ross Poldark or George Warleggan will appear any moment on horseback.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Jamaica Inn, Bolventor PL15 7TS England
This Coaching Inn in the middle of Bodmin Moor was the real life haunt of smugglers, pirates and vagabonds due to it's lonely location away from the eyes of the revenue men.

The real life events here inspired the author Daphne Du Maurier to write the novel 'Jamaica Inn' which has been made in to many TV versions, most recently by the BBC.

Ross and Demelza live in Nampara House in the show, and the scenes of their home are filmed near the Jamaica Inn in the village of St Breward.

The Jamaica Inn is also said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. Its also a perfect place to take a hearty pub lunch, and pick up some Poldark Souvenirs!

My sisters and I are big Doc Martin and Poldark fans. Saw this offered through Richards tours and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! Our trip began with Richard picking us up at our hotel in London and driving us to Port Issac.. Richard was so pleasant and knowledgeable, we all felt very comfortable with him immediately Spent the first day in Tintagle and Port Issac. Spent the night in Port Issac which was fantastic . Richard picked us up the next morning and took us to the beautiful Poldark filming sites. He also took us to the famous Jamaica Inn to shop and eat if we wanted to. Richard dropped us off at our hotel in the evening. Hassle free way to visit these sites. Would not want to even think of navigating the narrow roads ourselves. Richard did an excellent job!

I absolutely savored every moment of this tour and would highly recommend it, as you will be engulfed in a world away from the hustle and bustle of urban life to enjoy life's simplicity, cordial interactions which a city dweller like me has been missing and the majesties of nature.
Richard was fabulous in explaining and pointing out all the details each step of the way and although we traveled during winter and encountered rain, winds and fog - every location afforded its own uniqueness which added to the dramatization and value of its connections or history attached.
The beautiful village of Port Isaac and surrounding locations allowed you to soak up Doc Martins' quaint world. A walk around the village and most especially the Doc's surgery and Cottage for memorable photos, a hike up the hill along nearby cliffs is a must as you will definitely love the view.
Visiting magical Tintagel was breathtaking and upon Richard's recommendation, I stayed at the Old School and Restaurant Hotel. In one word - Fabulous!. I loved my stay there and wished it was longer!. Visiting the Golden Lion pub will allow you to enjoy a great fulfilling meal, some local company and of course, take lots of photos as you explore the village.
We visited Poldark country the next day and I was really reluctant to leave the locations we ventured in. It was absolutely stunning to visit Holywell Bay, Wheal Coates and Charlestown. You will come to marvel at the power of nature and the lives lived in Poldark's world. To cap the day before returning to London, we travelled to the infamous Jamaica Inn in Bodmin moor. I would highly encourage this visit as I tried my first Cornish pasty here and loved it, soaked up the interiors of the smugglers inn and was introduced to the world of Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel. This tour was the best experience ever! Thanks for the introduction to Cornwall Richard. Absolutely a fan here!
