Overview

Come From Away is based on real-life events of residents of Gander taking in 7,000 air passengers stranded in Canada after 9/11. Learn how the Newfoundland community took in the ‘come from aways’ into their lives and into their hearts in this heart-warming show. 12 cast members play 84 characters between them in this fast-paced account of those who suddenly found themselves in Gander at a momentous time.

Visit: Phoenix Theatre, Church Road, London WC2H 0JP England

Gander is a small Canadian town, but when 38 international aircraft are diverted to Gander airport after 9/11, the townspeople welcome in 7,000 passengers to the town by giving them shelter, food and clothes. Initiated as honorary Newfoundlanders, the “come from aways” deal with their new-found surroundings before being able to fly out of Gander and return to the United States. In a place where romance blossoms, prejudice can also grow and the show discusses how individuals are treated after the atrocity. Reuniting years after the attack, the show commemorates the compassionate behaviour of those who live in Gander and the neighbouring area. You have the choice of two seating options for the performance. Standard-price seats offer a good view of the stage and are normally positioned in the rear stalls or dress circle. Alternatively, select top-price seating to enjoy a full view of the stage and get closer to the stars!

I went to the theatre with limited expectations, it was my wife’s birthday and she wanted to see ‘Come from Away’. I was reluctant to go but can now admit that I was wrong, the show is outstanding, excellent and brilliant it is like being smacked in the face by an unexpected wet cod. The show was fast, full of energy, sad in parts but mainly very funny. The cast are outstanding and play all of their parts so well, the choreography is precise and adds to the overall professional finish of the show. This is one high-energy musical and on the night we attended the entire audience (as far as I could tell) gave the cast and musicians a very well deserved standing ovation. We loved it and would certainly go again.

Totally boring waste of 3hours in uncomfortable seats with no interval. We are English speaking but could not hear most of the words. No stage set or costumes . I would not recommend this play at all....awful😬☹️

The songs were great the dancing was great but just couldn’t understand what they were saying or singing which really spoilt it for me. Maybe they should hand out the lyrics on a sheet before the musical starts.

My wife and I had no idea what this play was about but bought tickets at the Leister Square ticket booth because they were discounted and excellent stall seats. A couple in line had seen it and recommended it. Well within two minutes of the start of the show it became clear what this was about. What an unbelievable and creative way to tell a story. September 11, 2001 a day to now be remembered in more ways than one. Loved all parts of it from beginning to end.
