Overview

Island Wings Air Service is owned and operated by Alaska veteran pilot Michelle Masden, who started flying in 1977 and began her business in Ketchikan in 1993. Island Wings takes the time and makes the effort to help you realize your Alaskan dreams. Share our love of flying through our vast Alaskan wilderness. Experience the freedom of flight over the wild grandeur of the mountains, the islands and the endless sea. Our focus is the quality of your experience. From the handling of your reservation, to the equipment we operate, to the places we visit; we don't compromise and neither should you. The total time for this tour is 2.5 hours including: the two hour flightseeing tour and fifteen minutes for the pick-up and fifteen minutes for the drop-off. This tour takes you on a flight from Ketchikan to the Misty Fjords National Monument with a landing on a freshwater lake or a saltwater fjord with approximately a thirty minute stopover.

Stop At: Misty Fjords National Monument, Ketchikan, AK

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

Michelle is a highly experienced and friendly pilot who clearly loves sharing this exceptional beauty with people. Her plane is in immaculate condition. Landed on a mirror smooth mountain lake - wow. Highly recommended!

I don’t know many people who can say they were in a private float plane that landed in front of a waterfall impossible to get to really any other way, but I can say thanks to Adam and this company, my husband and myself have done this! Take off and landing were so incredibly smooth that it was nothing like the traditional jerkiness you might imagine on a commercial flight. Cruising at around 1,200ft up you’re able to see everything around. A bonus to our trip was seeing a sunken ship, flying next to a Bald Eagle, and a pilot who was incredibly smart and informative. With an epic playlist that matched the mood perfectly. This is a bucket list item!

My wife and I stayed in Ketchikan for 10 days and did about every tour available. Most were excellent. This was outstanding. If I were limited to only one tour, this would have been our pick. We shared the tour with two other couples but the plane was roomy and we all had great views. Misty Fjords was socked in with the weather so we went about 50 miles north and the pilot landed on Reflection Lake to see one of the Forestry Service's guest cabins. The scenery was no less than spectacular throughout the entire trip. The picture that accompanies the Island Wings webpage on Tripadvisor is no fluke - every bit of our flight looked like this. Every aspect of this tour was a pleasure and well worth the cost. Tripadvisor limits you to 5 stars. Spinal Tap would give this an 11.

My husband and I stayed in Ketchikan for a week and this was one of our favorite experiences! The views were absolutely stunning and getting to see the island from the air was so special. Our pilot, Michelle, was amazing. All of our take off and landings were incredibly smooth. I am prone to motion sickness but felt fine the entire time. She has lived in Ketchikan for a long time and is very knowledgeable about the area. Michelle pointed out interesting natural and historical aspects of what we were seeing and was able to answer all of our questions. I can't recommend this tour enough!

This sea plane tour was the highlight of our trip without a doubt! These pilots make this tour several times a day for months at a time and our pilot (Adam) made us all feel like our flight was the highlight of his day. We were so grateful that we spent the money on this once in a lifetime excursion. One tip I would give passengers is to put the person that has the best camera and is the best at taking videos/pictures in the co-pilot seat. They have the best opportunity for capturing the beautiful sights without wing obstruction.
