Overview

Spend quality time with one of the world's most exotic animals. You trek with your own llama, who walks on a lead, at your side, while carrying your belongings in saddle bags.
Llama are highly intelligent, clever animals = requiring that you get to know them (and work with them) to successfully complete your trek. The subtle 'bond' you form with your llama companion is highly rewarding.
You experienced guide will help you get to know your woolly companion.
Your guide will also share a range of local Kaikoura history and information, including the extraordinary effects of the 2016 earthquake (the largest ever recorded in New Zealand)
You do not ride your llama.

The half day trek was leisurely and mostly along the beach. Kevin (the llama boss) explained the llamas’ personalities and how to best lead them and gain their trust. Interesting sights along the way including seals relaxing on rocks just metres away. We stopped for tea and cake which was in the llama’s backpack! Just so heartwarming to have this time to bond with the beautiful llamas. They are quite docile and they don’t smell. And llamas DON’T spit!!

Such a fun trip! It was a nice walk and great to get that close to the llamas and learn a lot about them. Amazing to develop a relationship with the llamas and see how they learn to trust you.

I can't say enough good things about the Llama trek. This was such a unique and special experience for our family. Each adult member of our party of 6 was given a llama that we worked with for the entire trek. I also had my 7 year old son with us, and he walked with the guide and myself the majority of the time. The llamas are shy and cautious by nature, due to their natural prey instincts. Under the instruction of our guide, we could feel our individual llamas grow in their trust toward their walking partner. That was such an incredible experience. By the end, we found ourselves bickering playfully over whose llama was superior. (Mine was, of course!) This was an easy walk, nothing steep or arduous. There were lots of breaks built in for the llamas to graze. That was a nice thing-- I have done so many horseback riding experiences where we are fighting to keep the horse from grazing. Here, the llamas were encouraged to eat. No wonder they liked us at the end. I will say the walk wasn't anything to write home about in terms of views. No stunning vistas or seal colonies. Just a simple path. But really we didn't need any of that. The llamas were fun enough! I believe our guide-- Kevin-- was the owner of the property. He was lovely. Funny, patient, and informative. I was very impressed with how he worked with our son. He even let him lead one of the llamas all by himself toward the end-- we did not anticipate that! He also brought along his 3 dogs. They were fun companions for our trek too. Often running ahead and bringing back sticks and so on. We did lots of things during our 10 days in New Zealand but the whole family agrees the Llama trek was among our favorite.

Fantastic FUN with Kevin and Max 🦙 & Bluey 🦙! With care and diligence, Kevin taught us how to gain trust from the llamas and become their friends for our trek. The trek itself was easy along flat coastal pathways along Kaikoura Bay, quite scenic! The llamas are so very well behaved & obviously well cared for. They are in fact quite good characters! Along the way, we saw sea lions on the rocks which was exciting. Kevin explained everything we needed to know about the llamas and their care plus he shared fascinating stories about the areas where we trekked. Kevin is an excellent advocate for llamas (& all animals) and a fabulously interesting guide. I recommend Kaikoura Llama Trekking for everyone visiting the area!
