Puthu was a great guide. We got a little insight into what life is like for Bali. We had so many great food tastings. We would definitely do this again

It saddens me to write a review like this, but this food tour was disappointing. We’re frequent food tour explorers across multiple continents, and they tend to be the highlights of our trips. We love them as a way to immerse ourselves in local foodie delights, culture, history, to explore spots off the well-trodden tourist path, and to make new friends. This tour fell short. We tried 8 dishes in total (no suckling pig) from 2 vendors - think nasi goreng, mei goreng, bako ayam, Balinese breakfast cakes (the usual intro to Indonesia dishes). A few items were tasty, but nothing really stood out or were new to us as we had already tried these “street foods” at our hotel or in the States. We killed some time exploring the market in between (which is largely households goods for locals (think undergarments, shoes, toiletries, etc.)), which meant the actual tour was about 30-45 mins (and we spent about 2+ hours total driving there and back). The tour description lists 5-7 hours, so I figured we’d be eating and walking a bunch (which is common for most food tours), but that wasn’t the case. We’ve never been on a food tour with this little food from so few vendors (none of which we interacted with) or with such limited descriptions of the food & ingredients, cooking techniques or culinary history. For example, our guide didn’t tell us the Indonesian names of some of the dishes and couldn’t identify the ingredients in a few (a serious issue if you have allergies or dietary restrictions). We left fairly hungry, and I checked my watch and we walked a total of 500 steps. It felt both oddly quick and uncomfortably long, all at once. From a tour guide perspective, our guide was sweet but the conversation was mostly personal and we didn’t get much outside of basic small talk. We were hoping to walk away with a deeper understanding of Balinese and/or Indonesian culture and history, but we didn’t. Most food tour guides are passionate foodies, culture ambassadors, and delight in showing off their favorite foods and sharing their knowledge. Our guide, sadly, felt like she was ticking off a to do list and wasn’t prepared to answer most of our very basic culinary and history questions. I would recommend that the tour operator add in more food stops, diversify the offerings, and train their guides more. As it currently stands, this should be a 3 hour lunch tour at half the price. We would like to give our guide the benefit of the doubt (maybe it was a bad day?) but to fly 26 hours then sit in 2+ hours of bumper to bumper traffic for 45 minutes of small talk and foods we’ve had before or that can be had at a hotel, it wasn’t worth it for us.

Yanika was so hospitable, checking in with us before hand due to the weather not being great. The markets were amazing and Yanika organised a range of dishes to try based on our likes and dislikes. We had a great tour from pickup to drop off, thanks for an amazing local food experience

We did our street food tour with the lovely Yanika. From the time she picked us up to the moment she dropped us off she was very friendly and welcoming and gave us lots of information about Bali and its culture. She took us to a local market where we had the opportunity to try authentic Balinese street food which was very tasty and flavoursome. I think our favourite was the meatballs and Nasi Goreng but we would give the Balinese cake 5 stars. She walked us through the rest of the market and we also stopped at a fruit stall where she explained all the different fruits that were on display. Overall we had an amazing evening and would commend Yanika on her general knowledge and professionalism
