The novelty of riding a panoramic wore off very quickly as the initial route was a back track of the route we took from Geneva to Zermatt the day before. It did not help that it rained at the start of the trip - it was near impossible to take any photographs and even when the sun is out and the windows are dry, there are reflections from internal lightings in the carriages. The Landwasser viaduct came and went and depending on your carriage, you are not likely to capture any memorable moments. Unless one has an out of body experience, the best view of the viaduct is still the advertisement aerial photographs. The excitement and anticipation of a scenic route wore off as the 7.5 hours ride on the slowest express train progresses. It became too long when you have to sit under the sun, especially when the train had many stops at some stations and along the way, to wait for on-coming trains to pass on the predominantly single track route. Seating under the intense heat from glass panoramic windows is like sitting in a green house. And a good sunglasses is necessary to protect your eyes from the UV. Perhaps winter might be a better time to ride the Glacier Express? And it would be advisable to break the Glacier Express journey into shorter sections as advised by their website e.g. Zermatt to Brig, Brig to Andermatt, Andermatt to Chur and Chur to St Moritz. Zermatt was compact, crowded and vibrant. Elite Hotel reasonable if not good and conveniently situated. St. Moritz was dead by the time we got in at 1737 hours and on a Saturday . The hotel, Laudinella was average and overdue for upgrade (I had to slam my room door shut, some power sockets were loose, there was only 1 chair and one small single sofa seat) and situated some 25 mins (walking) from where the train station was. All shops including the Coop supermarket were closed by 1800 hours. The only life that was evident was the Catholic Church of Saint Maurice where a Mass was ongoing and the bells pealed. Alleluia!
