We paid a lot to get premium tickets. The seats were so close together. Twice someone's lantern caught fire and we had nowhere to escape. One worker was climbing the chairs to put the fire out with this tiny fire extinguisher. All our pictures came out us squished between rows of chairs and not aesthetic. I was also constantly told off for not wearing my ticket/lanyard around my neck when I'd taken it off for a picture They sold so many 'premium' tickets that the premium food area had long queues. There weren't as many vegetarian options despite us telling them ahead of time. The shows were boring and we couldnt wait for the lanterns to be honest. Seeing all them lanterns in the sky was amazing. But I wish I'd seen it from afar and not bothered with all this

BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, EMOTIONAL. Would I do it again? Probably not. The lighting of the lanterns was amazing. Everything leading up to it was quite stressful - it was definitely a TEST of patience and tolerance. I wish we were more prepared/knew what to expect more. Some things you need to know, before you go: 1) You NEED NEED NEED to have your eticket BEFORE meeting at the fountain at MAYA shopping center. If you don’t, contact the tour guide, and they’ll WeChat it to you, which is what happened in our situation. 2) “Meet at the fountain,” means waiting in lines with a few hundred, if not thousands, of others who are going to the same event - each line representing the level of ticket you bought (e.g., Standard entry, VIP entry, etc.). BE MINDFUL of the line you’re standing in otherwise you’ll be waiting in the wrong line - which is what we almost did. We were in line waiting for a shuttle for about 1.25hrs 3) We were in the shuttle line at 3:30pm midday. The sun was hot, there isn’t guaranteed shade, bring sun cover if you need it. 4) With the amount of traffic heading to the site, it’ll take around 50min - 1.5hrs getting to the site. 5) If you bought a standard ticket, there’s a good chance you’ll be riding that 1.5hrs on a songthaew up there - which also means you’ll be riding it back. Riding it back is fast and easy assuming you get back to the exit quick enough after the event, since songthaews are let our first in the parking lots and it’s first-come-first-served. 6) If you’re standard ticket, like us, you will need to stand in another queue to present your tickets on entry. EACH LINE REPRESENTS THE COLOR OF YOUR TICKET ENTRY - e.g., seat VS7 purple - therefore we stood in the purple line. The line wasn’t too bad here, yet. We waited about 20 min. 7) Upon entry, we got physical tickets on a lanyard to wear and show where we could go. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR PHYSICAL TICKET ONCE YOU GET IT. Mine ended up FALLING off the lanyard sometime during the night. Fortunately I had a picture of it to use as a replacement to get to my seat to do the lanterns. 8) The agenda for the event goes something like this: entry, light a candle and say a prayer (optional), find your section for lanna style dinner, stand in line for food, eat, wander around the shops, you can also grab some snacks, listen to live music and watch some dance, at 7:30 you can begin seating for the show and lantern, end. 9) There are long food lines. We waited in the shortest line we could find (ended up being for khao soi) and it was about 15-20min. You can get more food, but you’ll need to stand in line again. 10) By the time you eat, it’ll be dark and the temperature will cool down a lot and the bugs will come out. BRING A JACKET AND BUG SPRAY. 11) The Main bathroom near the entrance had a 40min wait!!! THERE ARE OTHER RESTROOMS surrounding the show arena area. If you walk to the other side of the show arena, you will find more restrooms with shorter lines. I wish we, and everyone else, knew this. 12) There are free snacks near the shopping stalls - grab a mini boat plate so you can stand in line for them! We didn’t want to stand in another line, so we passed on these. 13) All the shopping vendors will have their merchant prices higher than you’ll see at other night markets. Keep this in mind when buying things. 14) There is a lovely show before the lanterns with welcome message, a traditional dance, presentation of monks, monks prayer over the crowd, and THEN you do the lanterns. The show is spoken and translated in English, Portuguese, Thai, and Japanese. You NEED to be patient and hear them all before moving on to the next part of the n show. 15) LIGHT YOUR LANTERN THE RIGHT WAY or it’ll light on fire literally right next to you. Unfold the lantern, hold the top UP! The small ring underneath the lantern has four lighting points that you’ll need lit first. Be patient and wait for your balloon to be fully puffed up with hot air before releasing. You get TWO lanterns- meaning you get TWO chances. 16) In all the excitement, don’t forget, before releasing your lantern, to say a prayer or whatever you believe in, before releasing them. 17) As mentioned before, if you leave early enough and you have a standard ticket, you’ll be able to leave first on a songthaew. 18) We arrived back at the MAYA shopping mall around 10:30pm - I’m sure others with VIP tickets and rode in an AC shuttle or bus got back around 12am since they couldn’t leave the parking lot. But it’s late enough that everything was closing for food except 7eleven. We got some Gimbap at 7eleven, brought it back to our hotel, and ate it in complete silence to end our eventful night.

Phony shows of what are supposed to be traditional music and dances. Poorly organized, long lines for restroom and food, delays and no concern for safety. The stage just burnt down and people had to be evacuated. Way preferable to book cheaper and simpler events directly at the local travel agencies. This one is too big, badly organized and a rip off. They make it look like it's the only option available, but it's not.

The performances were too drawn out, all announcements had to be repeated in 4 languages. No clear directions on how to unpack and ignite the lanterns. Too much wind made it difficult, made the lanterns move horizontal instead or vertical, causing some burns and caught the entire stage on fire ! No safety precautions whatsoever, one fire extinguisher would have saved the stage. Only one of our 4 lanterns made it into the air, even with help from the ground staff. Return Buses were very poorly organized. All that said, the lanterns that did get off the ground looked amazing

Terrible organization. Messy, confusing. The performances were poor to say the least. Drum show had playback and wasn’t even synced properly. Everything was late due to having only one entrance for the stage area, so they had to wait until everyone was in to start. Finally, the horrible lack of planning and safety, when the clearly very flamable stage burned down completely. Luckily, no casualties or significative injures reported, only minor injuries. Leaving the place after that took forever and was very chaotic. Would’t ever go again.
