If you don't have a lot of time in Cambridge or want an introduction to the town before you delve into more details over coming days, this is a good tour. -- Tour started and ended on time. Meeting point was easy and obvious. -- Becky had studied Spanish and Italian for her undergrad degree in Cambridge and is now in her 4th year as a Masters student in Italian Literature. -- Her voice was loud enough such that we didn't have to crane our ears and necks to hear her (we had 13 in our group), despite it being a Sunday, in the open air, with people whizzing around. -- Becky peppered fact with folklore, and debunking of known fiction. Who doesn't like a good rumour or story? -- We went past almost all the places mentioned in the details of this activity, so description is pretty accurate. -- Highly recommend to add on the Punting portion. Firstly, on the walkabout, you might see the colleges from a distance. You get closer if you punt along River Cam. But still, no internal access. :-( Secondly, you cover a few more colleges in detail compared to just on the walking tour alone. - Punting guide was not as informative as Becky, but he has superb punting skills, weaving quickly and easily around poorer punters. Major tip: Please bring some cash to give a tip to your Cambridge guide (and your punter guide, if you may) after the tour. That's how they earn their living expenses for their school year. I felt so bad as I had literally just landed in London and came to Cambridge with only a credit card in my pocket. Hence my taking the time to write a review here to give Becky the recognition, and future income, she deserves. What I would have preferred: -- Although we went past almost all mentioned places, it was quite a touch-and-go. We didn't get to enter into any college other than the courtyard of Pembroke College, and for 90% of the way, we were seeing the backside of the colleges instead of the front entrance of the college or college's chapel. I felt that was a pity. I would have wanted to see a dining hall where they held College dinners (monthly, weekly, annually), or the inside of a Great St. Mary's or King's College chapel. That's why I said this is better as an introductory "orientation" tour only. -- The walking tour takes you back to original start point, and does not actually hand you directly in the hands of the partner punting company. So, you actually have to walk 20 mins from the end of the walking tour and make your way to Cambridge Punt Company station yourself. Good luck if you have no internet/data. -- Because you get 2 guides on the 2 parts of the tour, so you get 2 sources of info. The 1st guide tells you the student population in 31 colleges is about 25,000. The 2nd guide estimates it at 18,000 to 22,000 (depending on who fails and gets retained!) The 1st guide tells you the Mathematical bridge was by William Etheridge, and James Essex . The 2nd guide just mentions Essex. Technically, both are right: The bridge was designed by William Etheridge, and built by James Essex. Maybe they need to reach a consensus before they tell any less-informed tourists different things. :-)

An excellent tour both walking and punting. There was a last minute change of the itinerary on the day swapping the order of our tours, but we received a phone call early in the morning and details were both text and emailed though. All very professional and handled well. The tour guides on the punt and the walking tour were very friendly and very knowledgable.

I am not going to lie this is my 2nd review and, I have deleted the original. Sadly the tour itself was chaotic from the start and our tour guide was very quietly spoken so often drowned out by other louder guides. She would also often start talking before our group had gathered around meaning some details were lost. We had booked the combo ticket with the punt but, this was missed as we were sent to the wrong location and missed our slot. A compliant to Viatour was dismissive and left me feeling disappointed with the service received from both companies. I would therefore rate my experience of the walking element of the tour (can't comment on the punting element) as 2*'s. However other reviews speak for themselves and I think we were just unlucky it being a busy day with a quietly spoken guide (on a one to one basis she was fine). However, following my previous (now removed) very negative review, Adam from Cambridge Alumni Tours did reach out to me to discuss fully my experience and refund the punting element of my ticket (something Viatour told me they would not do as the itinerary having been fulfilled even though we missed our punt). I did tell Adam of the abrupt service I had received from Viatour as this is clearly not the level of service the Tour company themselves wish to provide. I have therefore added a further 2*'s for the prompt response to my complaint and the time Adam took to ensure he spoke directly to me.

Our guide Francesco was very personable and knowledgeable. He made the stories interesting and brought history to life in his narrative. I would highly recommend!

We enjoyed our walking tour. The guide did a good job of helping us with understanding the history and how the university worked. Some great stories that we still remember and have told friends. The punting tour was not included as the operator was not working so they gave us our money back for this portion.
