Overview

Restored to its Edwardian Arts and Craft splendour, Winterbourne House is a unique heritage attraction – set within seven acres of beautiful botanic gardens. Only minutes from Birmingham city centre, Winterbourne is a hidden gem – home to beautiful antiques and over 6,000 plant species from around the world. Wander along the woodland walk, stroll through the hazelnut tunnel, cross the 1930’s Japanese Bridge or simply soak up the tranquillity of this perfectly English Edwardian home.

Visit: Winterbourne House and Garden, Winterbourne Botanic Garden 58 Edgbaston Park Road University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2RT England

Escape the busy modern world for a moment of tranquil calm in this hidden garden oasis.

Winterbourne is also one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa garden in Birmingham. The garden was lovingly created by the homeowners, Margaret and John Nettlefold, using the books of Gertrude Jekyll as guides and inspiration.

Today the botanical garden is Grade II listed and offers colour and interest throughout the year. The restored walled garden complete with crinkle-crankle wall, is a riot of rainbow shades from May until October. The lawns are fringed with striking colour themed borders, and beyond lies an original sandstone rock garden and a woodland walk through Gunnera leaves and Rhododendron displays. The botanical garden contains plants from around the globe with collections of plants from China, North and South America and the Alpine areas of the world.

This place was lovely surprise and local. Hidden gem. I took my mum here who was in a wheelchair. My son, husband and and I were very surprised, how lovely and big this place was. It had a lift to see all the floors of the house, which it was easy to wheelchair my mum. It was amazing. The gardens were amazing and the tea room was perfect, very clean and lovely friendly staff from start to finish. It's definitely worth a visit.

Beautifully planted gardens with lots of unusual species. The house has a very interesting history and each room has beautiful arts and crafts furniture and wallpaper.

We spent an enjoyable hour plus exploring this garden…or series of gardens…tucked within the Birmingham U grounds. Even in March there was lots to see…imagine how it will look in full bloom! Then there’s the house…loved all the William Morris wallpapers & fabrics! We skipped the tearoom, which did not smell too appetizing, & reportedly serves food prepped in the U’s kitchens.

Gorgeous Arts and Crafts house with a stunning garden. Best public garden in Birmingham in my opinion. But the highlight for us was the afternoon tea! It was extremely generous, we had a stand each, lovely sandwiches, scones, savoury tarts and cakes. In fact we couldn't finish it all so boxes were provided to take the rest home! Add in a lovely gift shop, printing press and bookshop and you have a recipe for a fabulous outing.

We were looking for something to do and found some good reviews about this hidden place in Birmingham so we booked tickets online. The place is next to Birmingham University and this is part of the university. The car park is a good size. The building seems nice, there is a cafe here as well as a small gift shop and secondhand book shop here. The garden is probably the main draw here. The grounds are big with different paths to take, there is a small stream flowing through the lower grounds and some stepping stones in some water which is nice to walk. There are a couple of greenhouses with different tropical plants in etc which are nice to walk through. Overall this is a good place to visit, when the grounds are in full bloom it would be even better. Would recommend visiting this hidden place in Birmingham.
