Also spelled Al Khawr means "sea on threesides" in Arabic. Older than Doha but far smaller in size. Al Khor is located an easy 50 kilometres to the north of Doha. It used to be the center of the pearling industry in Qatar but lost its importance after the introduction of cultured pearls. It now boasts a scenic harbour where you can find traditional fishing dhows, a corniche leading to mangrove colonies and a museum showcasing the fishing, pearling and dhow building industries.

Stop At: EAST-WEST / WEST-EAST by Richard Serra, Brouq Nature Reserve, Doha Qatar
The landscape of the Zekreet peninsula has a unique and fascinating geology. Salt flats, plateau rocks and open desert dominate this scenery. There are no sand dunes here, but bizarre rock formations and great views over the blue waters of the gulf. Shortly before reaching film city you will drive up a slope and see the buildings in the distance. The walled city is rather the size of a village, yet it does feature a main gate and city walls with guard towers on the front. While nothing is authentic, the buildings show how a traditional village in the region might have looked in the past. For the best view continue through to the back and climb the stairs to a covered terrace overlooking the houses and the green oasis in the back. There is a small shop that sells potato chips and bottled water / soda. Photo opportunities, Oryx, Ostriches & spectacular scenery If the weather is nice, you could walk into the oasis next to Film City. An artificial drinking pond sometimes attracts the herd of Oryx grazing nearby. Warning: Even though Oryx are beautiful photo models, they will defend their young ones and might attack if you get closer than 30-40 meters. Thus keep kids supervised.

My driver’s name is Adil. He is okay, but as a solo female traveler, I would have rather just paid for a taxi to drop me off where I wanted to go and explore on my own. He was too overbearing for me and although he was nice enough to extend the tour longer than listed, I was pressured to write a good review. So I came back to my review to write an honest one because I honestly did not enjoy it. I was annoyed and irritated at the end. He was very focused on his reviews. And the last 30 minutes, to drop me off at my hotel, he drove recklessly by speeding for no reason. I wouldn’t book this tour again.

Imran Khan was very knowledgeable, courteous, and friendly. I learned a lot to better understand Qatar’s atypical society structure. He took me to many of the city’s sites. His English isn’t bad, although you might have to repeat some sentences to be understood. I didn’t have a lot of time to plan and book tours in advance and had very limited time available - a 2-day stay. So the concierge made the connection for me just 3.5 hours after we first spoke. It cost 700 Riyal — about $190 with today’s exchange rate. Good introduction to Doha. It helped inform me of what I really wanted to see myself in-depth on the second day.
